22nd May 2023- what a day! The girls and boys camogie and hurling teams represented the school in the Sciath na Scol finals. The weather played it’s part with Pairc Uí Chaoimh providing the backdrop on a sundrenched Monday afternoon. The girls were up first and played a very strong GS na Dúglaise side. The girls gave it their all and after a tough 1st half responded brilliantly in the 2nd. They were simply beaten by a better side but they kept going until the end with Laura O’ Riordan scoring a goal and a great point. Captain Abbie O’ Brien led the team brilliantly ably assisted by vice captain Ava O’ Sullivan. The boys were up against a strong Leamlara side and what a game it was. End to end, score after score, goal after goal. Our boys got a great start and goals from Cormac McCarthy and Sam O’ Leary got the lads on their way. Leading 3-1 to 5 points at half-time they knew that Leamlara would come back strong and that’s exactly what happened. It was one of the most entertaining halfs of hurling seen down the Páirc in a long time with no team holding back. Leamlara kept coming back but goals in the 2nd half from captain Callum Nodwell, Fionn Healy and another from Cormac McCarthy kept them ahead. Donagh McHugh was outstanding in goals and some heroic defending by the backs ensured the lads held on at the end for a great victory. While the lads hurled well, their workrate and determination really stood out. Special mention to the huge support on the day from the rest of the school that travelled along with the many parents and other supporters. Their noise and support really helped the lads over the line. Captain Callum Nodwell along with vice captain Cormac McCarthy accepted the cups on behalf of their team. Thanks to the boys and girls mentors for preparing the teams and for looking after them so well. Thanks to Sciath na Scol for organising and making it a day that will live long in the memory. Special thanks also to Emmet and Emer Fennell who kindly sponsored tops for all the players. We hope all the players will hold great memories of the day for the rest of their lives. Up the Hill!
