Indoor Football Boys Blitz 2017

Indoor football

By Bobby Kelleher and Ryan Loftus

All the boys from 4th class went to Whitechurch to play an indoor football blitz. The name of the tournament is called Peil Faoi Dhíon. It’s different to normal football because you pick the ball of the ground, score in a hoop and it’s indoor. Ryan, Bobby, Coran, Dean, Conor O’ Mahony, Ciarán, Conor McHugh all played. We played Glenville, Rathpeacon, Cloghroe and Gaeil Scoil Pheig Sayers. We had a great time. It’s good to try different types of sports. Thanks to Mr. Prout and Mr. Mather for taking us.

Indoor Football Girls Blitz

4th Class Indoor Football Blitz by Ellie Lynch

On the 1st of December the 4th class girls went to Little Island to play an indoor football blitz. We played Scoil Oilibheir Sundays Well and Rushbrooke.

In the matches we had to score up into a hoola hoop, if we kicked it up it would be a goal and if we hand passed it in it would be a point. We had 12 players so 6 played the first half and everytime half time came the other 6 came on. If someone got injured they would put a sub on.

When we weren’t playing we watched the other teams playing from upstairs and we had some water if we were hot from playing. We had a really good time at Little Island and we really enjoyed playing in all the matches.

Sciath na Scol Finals 2016

Girls final v Inch By Kay Sheehan (Captain)

Sciath na Scol Champions

On the 8th of November, the Watergrasshill girls took on Inch in the Sciath Na Scol final in Páirc Uí Rinn. Earlier the same day, the Hill boys set the tone by beating Whitechurch 1-8 to 2-1. So next up, it was the girls turn to taste the success.

The Hill started the first half off by scoring 2-1 in the first five minutes, with players Ellie O’ Sullivan, Ríona Brown and Maggie Darragh, the vice captain, all contributing to the scoreline. The team showed great teamwork and skills with Holly Burke supporting well and Chloe Webb Duggan, who got the next point from a tricky angle.

Inch continued battling hard and made their mark on the scoreboard by scoring from far out. But Watergrasshill were quick to respond with Kay Sheehan kicking a great goal into the back of the net. As the first half came to an end, Ríona kicked another goal and the score at halftime was 4-3 to 1-0 to the Hill!

Inch came back fresh in the second half and began by kicking two nice points from play and putting great passes together. But the Hill struck again, showing their quick, skilled passing before Ríona popped in another goal, making it a hat-trick for her. Holly Burke added another goal for the girls, before Ríona hit the last one bringing the final score to 8-3 to 1-2.

A fantastic victory for a fantastic bunch of girls!! Finally, a huge thank you to our coaches, Ms. Watson, Ms. Mulholland and Angela who put in a massive effort since September.

Boys final v Whitechurch by Joseph O' Riordan (Captain)

On November the 8th 2016 the Sciath Na Scol final was scheduled to start at 1130AM in Pairc Ui Rinn.  The rain was lashing down but we as a team were all fit and ready to go. We wanted the match to be played.

We set off in the bus at 10am and arrived at 1030am in Pairc Ui Rinn.  At 11am our coaches Master O’Brien, Mr Murphy , Mr Prout and Mr Mather told us to tog off.

As the minutes ticked by, we received our final pep talk from our coaches and finally the time had come and we sprinted on to the pitch.

We completed our final drills in the rain.  Then we were presented one by one to the crowd and it was uplifting to see the great support from our school chanting  “Watergrasshill, Watergrasshill” .  We lost the toss of the coin so we played against the wind in the first half.    Sam Dennehy scored a great point to open the scoring but Whitechurch responded and scored a goal and  soon afterwards a point to put them three points up.  Sam scored another point but we were rocked when Whitechurch scored their second goal.  We went in at half time five points down.

During the half time team talk, our coaches told us to play as team, not as individuals, to relax and not to panic.   It was now or never to respond and the fight back began like the O’Donovan brothers from Skibbereen who said in the Olympics “work like dogs”.  We scored five unanswered points scored by Brendan Lehane, Eoghan Knaap, Dylan Roche and Sam Dennehy.  When Eoghan scored the lead point our supporters went crazy with delight in the stands.    We were now on top and Eoghan scored a fantastic goal.  Whitechurch went down the field but our rock solid backs refused to let them score.   When the final whistle went we were overjoyed to have won by four points.

Joseph O’Riordan captain and Ryan Murray vice captain lifted the cup and the medals were presented to all the players.

It was a great team performance from Ciaran Linehan,  Cathal O’Brien, Ryan Murray (Vice Capt) , Darragh Casey, Ciaran O’Riordan, Joseph O’Riordan (Capt), Conor Krol, Sam Dennehy, Brendan Lehane, Rory Leahy, Eoghan Knaap, Daniel Cronin, Bobby  Kelleher, Dylan Roche, Ryan Loftus, Sam O’Sullivan, Conor Hurley, David O’Toole, Conor McHugh, Dara Cufffe, David O’Connor, Coran O’Neill, Ben O’Neill, Shay O’Neill,Conor O’Mahony, Eoghan Looby, Dean Field, Sean O’Mahony and Shane O’Callaghan.

Football Mini 7’s - County Finals 2011

On Wednesday March 15th, Watergrasshill N.S. took part in the football mini 7’s County Finals which was played in our home pitch. We were up against hard teams. We beat Carrig Buí in the first game, we were losing at half time but we played a great second half to win. We then played St. Finbarr’s from Bantry in the second game and unfortunately, we were beaten. We were all disappointed. We had to win our last game which was against Glanworth in order to get through to the final but again, we were beaten by one point. The scores in all the matches were Dylan McCarthy, Daniel Dennehy, Owen Desmond, Aaron Spriggs and Christopher Healy. We were all disappointed we did not qualify but we can’t always win!!!

Girls Sciath Na Scol football 2010

Ms Watson was our trainer, helped out by Ms Cussen and Angela Fitzgerald. We started training every Tuesday and Thursday in September (weather permitting).

Firstly we had to elect a captain and vice captain. All the girls from 4th, 5th and 6th got to vote. Katie Hegarty was elected captain and Alana Nixon vice captain. Their jobs were to get the first aid, fill water bottles, sort out lifts for girls going to matches and tell all the girls when training and matches were on.

Our first match was against Glenville which was a friendly to get us prepared. We won well.

There were 6 other teams in our section: GS an Teaghlaigh Naofa, Whitegate, Cloyne, Presentation Convent Fermoy, Aghada and GS de Hide. Our first match in the league was against Whitegate and we won well. Unfortunately we lost to GS de Hide, GS an Teaghlaigh Naofa and Presentation Convent Fermoy. We drew against Cloyne and won our last match against Aghada. We did not qualify for the final.

We are very grateful to Ms Watson, Ms Cussen and Angela for giving up their free time in training us and bringing us to matches.

MiNi SeveNs

On Thursday 21st of October, the Watergrasshill girls took part in the Football Mini Sevens Competition in Carrigtwohill. Unfortunately we could only bring 10 girls on the day as it is a 7-a-side competition.

The trainers Ms Cussen, Ms Watson and Angela had the difficult task of picking the ten girls. They were Katie Hegarty, Arleen Fouhy, Kayleigh Kelleher, Louise Landen, Cliona Cronin, Ellen Fitzgerald, Rachel Atkinson, Olivia Lehane, Caoimhe Barrett and Andrea Quinn.

We competed against three teams on the day, Ballintotas, Whitgate, Little Island. In our first game we played Whitgate which we won on a score line of 2-3 to no score. In our second game we played Ballintotas which we won 2-3 to 1-1.

We then qualified for the semi final defeating Little Island on a score line of 1-4 to 1 point. We had now qualified for the final. We played Ballintotas again who had won the other semi final. We won on a scoreline of 1-4 to 1-2.

As we were victorious in the final we have now qualified for the County Final stages to be held in the New Year.

Boys Sciath Na Scol

In this year Sciath na Scol football, we were not as successful as other years. We were in Roinn F5, a tough division, with seven other schools who were Cill na Marta, Blarney BNS, St. Patrick’s Bandon, Crosshaven BNS, Brooklodge, GS Uí Riordain in Ballincollig and Ballinspittle.

I have to admit our results were not up to our normal winning standards. We did have a great game against the boys from Bandon in which we won 3-7 to 2-6 where Dylan McCarthy and Aaron Spriggs showed true skill. We would like to thank Master O’Brien and Mr. Prout for taking the time to train us.

By Pádraig O’Brien 4th Class.

The first match I played, I was put in goal. Unfortunately we lost that match. The next match we also lost. Then we won a game against Bandon. We won 2-6 to 3-7. The boys in 6th class were sad because we did not make the final. I really enjoyed participating in the Sciath na Scol.

Note : Indoor hurling for third and fourth class boys will be commencing after Christmas.
